Does the US surtax hit your goods?

Type a product, or drop an invoice, a courier bill or a product list. You get the surtax and everything else Canada charges at the border, with the source.

Does Canada have tariffs on US goods?

Yes. Three surtax orders are in force on goods made in the United States: the 2026 order (15%, 25% or 50% on 335 tariff lines, since 2026-09-08), steel and aluminum (25% or 50% on 294 lines) and motor vehicles (25% on 19 lines). They turn on where the goods were made, not where they were bought, so goods made elsewhere do not pay them even when they come from a US store.

Does Canada have a tariff on US cars?

Yes, 25% under the motor vehicles order. A car that qualifies for the US tariff pays it on its value less 15%; CBSA's own example is $10,625 on a $50,000 car. GST and the $100 air-conditioning excise come on top, and a car made more than 25 years before import is outside the surtax.

How much duty from the USA to Canada?

For goods made in the US, Canada or Mexico, usually none: CBSA charges no duty on personal goods marked as made in one of the three, and a business import gets the same 0% when the goods meet the CUSMA rules of origin. Goods made anywhere else pay the duty rate of their tariff line, even when they come from the US. The surtax, if the goods are US-made and listed, and GST or HST come on top.

What is the duty-free limit from the US to Canada (de minimis)?

By courier from the US or Mexico: no duty up to $150 and no GST or HST up to $40. By mail, or by courier from anywhere else: $20. Bringing goods back yourself: $200 after 24 hours away, $800 after 48 hours (you pay only on the part above it), and nothing on a same-day trip. The US surtax still applies to courier and mail parcels under these limits.

How do I calculate duty and import tax in Canada?

Duty is the tariff line's rate times the value; the surtax is its rate times the value (85% of it for a US car that qualifies); GST or HST is charged on the value plus the duty, the surtax and any excise. A US-made game console worth $1,000, sent by courier to Ontario: duty $0, surtax 50% $500, HST 13% of $1,500 = $195, so $695 at the border. The courier's own fee is extra.

Do I pay GST on imported goods?

Yes, above the low-value limits. A person living in Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador or Prince Edward Island pays HST at the border instead; a business import pays the 5% GST at the border and self-assesses the provincial part. Basic groceries are zero-rated.

How do I find my HS code for Canada?

Type what the goods are into the checker above: it reads the candidate lines of the Canadian Customs Tariff, their legal notes and CBSA's rulings, and asks only what decides the line, such as the material, the use or how it is put up. Or type the number from your invoice. The Harmonized System code has six digits; a Canadian tariff item has eight, and the 9th and 10th digits are a statistical suffix.

Why is UPS or FedEx charging me a brokerage fee?

It is the courier's own charge for clearing the parcel, not a Canadian duty or tax, and this checker does not include it. The duty and taxes on the courier's bill are Canada's, and you can check them here. CBSA's guide says you may refuse a courier delivery and clear the goods yourself at the CBSA, if you tell the courier when it delivers.

This check reads Canada’s three US surtax Orders in force (2026; steel and aluminum; motor vehicles), the Customs Tariff, the courier and postal remission orders, and the CRA and CBSA rules for GST, HST and the vehicle taxes. Which tariff item your goods fall under, and where they originate, are yours to confirm. It is not a CBSA ruling.
