Questions. Answered straight.

How much does a customs broker cost in Canada?

A fee per shipment, on top of the duty and GST you owe CBSA. Ours is $99 flat per shipment, whatever it is worth, up to 10 tariff lines, with every line checked. With more lines you see the price before anything is filed. Asking costs nothing.

Who files my entry?

A licensed Canadian customs broker, under its own licence. Your agency agreement, signed before anything is filed, names the broker. Norquin is the software that checks every line; it is not a customs broker.

What does a customs broker do?

A customs broker, or import broker, files your entry with CBSA as your agent. Only a licensed broker may do it for you for a fee.

Do I need a customs broker to import into Canada?

No, you may file yourself. Many businesses use a broker because the entry has to be right and on time.

How long does customs clearance take?

Sent at least an hour before arrival, CBSA aims to decide on arrival, 95% of the time. An inspection takes longer.

My shipment is held at customs. What can I do?

A parcel by mail can be delayed when CBSA sends it for more processing, and CBSA cannot track a single item. For a business shipment, send the invoice and choose "Stuck at customs now", so a person can call you. A licensed broker files the entry.

What documents do I need to import goods into Canada?

The commercial invoice, and the bill of lading or air waybill if you have it. We tell you if your goods need anything else.

What is CARM, and do I need it?

CBSA's online account for importers. You register your business yourself, with a CRA business number, then give the broker access. Without your own security in CARM, duty and GST are paid before release.
